Here is a little insight into my life. Every day, 7 days a week,  I have breakfast and then switch on the computer. On average I get between 50 and 100 emails and messages each day from people wanting information about buying generic Hepatitis C medication or information that relates to treating Hepatitis C.

One of the re-occurring questions is about the price of generic Hepatitis C medicine. Some people are worried because my prices seem too cheap; I get comments like

“This seems too good to be true.”

On the other hand I get lots of people who are in despair because they can not afford even the $550 for 12 weeks treatment with Sofosbuvir + Daclatasvir.

So it appears that there is some confusion about what the “right” price for generic Hepatitis C medicine actually is. This confusion probably arises because some sellers sell generic Hep C medicine for quite high prices and some advertise ridiculously low prices. So in this post I will talk a little about the cost of generic Hepatitis C medication.

When the Price of Generic Hepatitis C Medicine is too High

Amongst the I get emails there are regularly ones like the one below where a doctor has imported the generic Hep C medication into their particular country and is selling it directly to the patient. This happens in most countries where there is no National Health Service and doctors can exploit their desperate patients by offering treatment at a price that is much lower than the price of brand Hepatitis C medicines like Harvoni or Epclusa but way above what would be a fair price of the licensed generic medication. Unfortunately I have heard of doctors in the USA importing generic Hep C medicines for about US$650 and selling them for prices ranging from US$3,000 to US$7,000. I have had similar reports of this from just about every country that does not have a national health service.

In the example below, the Malaysian doctor imported Sofosvel  (generic Epclusa) from India and is selling it to a patient for 15 times the normal retail price. This on top of his normal consulting fees.

In other words instead of the correct price of around US$300 per bottle he is selling it for more than US$3,000 per bottle.

(On the other hand I see people being offered generic Hep C medication at ridiculously low prices… prices that are actually below the cost of manufacture, but I will deal with that problem later in this post .)

Actually it is my father who is suffering from Hep C. He has been suffering from Hep C for 20 years and later Diabetes since 15 years ago. He did the fibrosis scan in the beginning of this year, which was 10 days ago, and the result was 16.8 kPa. His HCV viral load was 900.000IU/mL.

You may be amazed to know that the doctor at the hospital charged us almost 15 times the original price.

 We cannot afford the treatment, if we were to continue buying the other 2 bottles from the doctor we would be bankrupt. Thus, I am trying to look for ways to get the medication with reasonable price.

So, there is the doctor selling generic Hep C medicine for an outrageous price, because he is trading on people’s trust. People think:

“Oh, he is a doctor so I can trust him.”

Sadly this is not true. Certainly the majority of doctors are good people  but doctors are just humans and like with all humans there are good people and bad people who are doctors. Doctors are not immune from greed.

So it is unfortunate that I regularly hear of doctors exploiting their patients by charging way, way too much for generic Hep C medicines, often to people who are struggling to afford treatment.

As with all human professions there are good doctors and bad doctors, generous doctors and greedy doctors.

High Prices for Hep C Generic Medicines Online

An internet search for Hepatitis C medication will reveal high prices and low prices for generic Hep C medication. In the case of highly priced websites these sites usually justify their high prices by making their site look like a professional medical site or pharmacy.

For example there was an organisation called Sunny Pharma operating out of a shed in Florida. They pretended to be a not for profit charity but charged triple the going rate for generic Hep C meds and then used high pressure telephone sales techniques on anyone who contacted them.

Some people are led to believe that the higher prices will reflect the quality of the medication. An example is the Hepatitis C medication made by the Indian pharmaceutical giant Natco; Natco’s brands include HepCinat generic Sovaldi), HepCinat LP (generic Harvoni) and Velpanat, (generic of Epclusa). These products are good products but they are always priced about 20% above the normal price range for generic Hep C medication to appeal to people who think that, because it is more expensive then it must be higher quality.

The reality is that all licensed generic Hepatitis C medication is exactly the same except for the colour of the pill and the name. This is because it is a requirement of Gilead’s license agreement that the exact same formula is used by all licensed manufacturers.

SO if you are buying a licensed generic Hepatitis C medication there is no difference in quality from one brand to the next. Of course unlicensed generics are another story. They are cheaper and there is no quality assurance with unlicensed generic Hepatitis C medication. I strongly advise against buying unlicensed generic Hep C medication.

So on one hand I get emails from people about the high prices of generic Hep C medication but on the other hand I get emails from people who have searched for hepatitis C medication on the Internet and come upon websites, or India-Mart advertisements like the one below, that offer a bottle of generic Harvoni, Hepcinat LP for about US$16. Obviously this is a scam because the cost of making 28 pills of generic Harvoni, without even packaging is more than US$35.

We  see another example of the ridiculously low prices again in the invoice below that was sent to me for comment from someone in Brazil who was searching the internet for cheap Hepatitis C medicines.

In this invoice the price is US$90 for 12 weeks treatment with Sofosbuvir + Daclatasvir in a single pill formulation plus $40 for shipping. Actually this price is also impossible, actually it is one about one quarter of what I buy the same product for, but unfortunately it is common to see such prices when searching the internet. These are scams that add to the confusion and concern of people seeking to buy generic Hepatitis C treatment.

Some low prices are “Bait” designed to hook desperate people looking for the cheapest cure. Usually if a price seems to good to be true it is not true.

These are bait prices.

The low prices are designed to get you to contact the seller or to send money and then the trader may send you one bottle and then demand further payment for the remaining two bottles. Or in some cases may  not send anything at all.

So on one hand there are prices that are too high and on the other hand there are prices that are too low.
